Chapter Fifteen

“I know him well enough to know that he is not in the habit of murdering his father’s friends,” Eve said angrily to Chuck’s posit that perhaps none of them knew Dr. Byrne that well.

“I agree with Eve,” Joelle said fiercely.

Eve was taken aback at hearing Joelle say those words.

“Preston had nothing to do with this,” Howard said. “I have to help him. Are they taking him to the sheriff station? Never mind, I’ll figure it out.” Howard left out the front door. The group in the lobby remained so quiet that they could hear the faint sound of his Aston Martin speeding away.

“Okay, so they found some sort of convenient evidence,” Ollie said, breaking the silence. “Has it occurred to anyone that the cops probably planted it? Isn’t that what the cops do in the boondocks?”

“No,” Eve said aggressively. “They do not. I know them. They would never plant evidence! Sheriff Strider is a good man. He is honest, noble, and trustworthy.”

“Alright, alright,” Ollie said as he put his hands over his head. “I didn’t know you were so in love with him. What did he find anyway?”

“A canister,” said Eve. “I guess it was a nitrous oxide canister, but I’m not sure.”

Ollie’s bluster immediately evaporated. “Oh,” he said weakly.

Eve watched Ollie’s cheeks turn a different color as he sunk into the orange leather couch and wondered if he was part chameleon. She looked around the group for the comfort of Peg and Deandra but remembered they had gone up to their room. They had both been upset to hear of Preston’s arrest. John had been very kind to them and told them that a rest in their room would certainly make them feel better. They were more than happy to take the stranger’s advice.

It was just as well that Peg and Deandra weren’t there to lend a shoulder for her to cry on. Crying on shoulders would be a waste of time. She was on the same page as Howard: she needed to help Preston immediately.

She locked gazes with Lisa. She would be a good place to start. Eve walked over to Lisa and invited her for a cup of tea in her small apartment suite. Lisa jumped at the chance to go somewhere different.

“Thank you,” Lisa said as she accepted the cup of tea a few minutes later. “I don’t know what to do with myself.”

“I thought it might be helpful to talk,” suggested Eve.” “Why don’t you tell me about Vic,” she said kindly. “You and he had been spending a lot of time together recently, correct?”

“Yes, it’s been odd. During this trip, he was the old Victor, or rather, the young Victor that I had dated when we were in college.”

“He broke up with you back then?” As Eve asked the question, she realized how rude it sounded but it didn’t appear to bother Lisa.

“Yes, he did,” replied Lisa as she set down her teacup and stared across the room with far away eyes. “For years, I wanted him back.
